Here, nothing is done without the Social Security Number (SSN), which is the social security or CPF, as we call it in Brazil. It sounds like an exaggeration, but it’s not. This card is your “free pass” in the country.
The SSN is used to report your salary to the US government and to prove a person’s eligibility for the US government’s benefits. You need Social Security to work, get your benefits, and receive some other government service.
To issue your SSN you will need your passport, documents proving your immigration status (examples: Form I-551, Form I-94 Arrival/Departure record or Form I-766 employment authorization card) and Form SS- 5-INST-PE.
If you are a J-1 or J-2 visa holder, you will also need your DS-2019 Exchange Visitor Status Eligibility Certificate. If you are a J-1 student, intern, or international visitor, you must have a letter from your visa sponsor.
If you are an F-1 or M-1 student, you will need the Form I-20 Nonimmigrant Student Eligibility Certificate.
The request for this document is free of charge and can be done at the SSN offices.
